Laser Hair Removal: Here’s What You Can Expect

Laser hair removal is the go-to solution for long-lasting smooth skin. Learn about the process, benefits, and what to expect from your treatments. If you’re ready to say goodbye to razors and waxing, it’s time to discover if laser hair removal is right for you!

How Laser Hair Removal Works

Laser hair removal uses concentrated light to target hair follicles. The pigment in the hair absorbs the light, which damages the follicle and slows future growth. Over time, treated areas become smoother, with hair growing back finer and lighter.

Most people need at least four sessions (approximately four to six weeks apart) since hair grows in cycles. The laser is most effective on hair in its active growth phase. Because of this, treatments are spaced several weeks apart to target new hair as it enters the cycle. While some hair may regrow, it’s often much less noticeable than before.

What to Expect During Treatment

A consultation is the first step before starting laser hair removal. A specialist will assess your skin and hair type to determine if you’re a good candidate. They may also perform a patch test to check how your skin reacts to the laser.

Before treatment, the area is cleaned, and you may be given protective eyewear. A cooling gel or device may be used to reduce discomfort. During the session, you’ll feel a series of light pulses, often described as a snapping sensation. The length of the session depends on the size of the area being treated. Small areas like the upper lip take minutes, while larger areas like the legs may take longer.

Results and Aftercare

After your session, some redness or swelling may occur, similar to a mild sunburn. This usually fades within a few hours. It’s important to avoid sun exposure and use sunscreen to protect treated skin. You may also be advised to avoid hot showers and harsh skincare products for a day or two.

Hair won’t disappear instantly. Over the next few weeks, treated hairs will shed, and new growth may appear between sessions. Each treatment reduces hair density, leading to long-term results after completing the full series of sessions. Some people may need occasional touch-ups to maintain smooth skin.

Who Is the Best Candidate?

Laser hair removal works best for people with dark hair and lighter skin. The laser targets pigment, so contrast between hair and skin helps the treatment be more effective. Advances in technology have improved results for those with darker skin tones, but very light or gray hair may not respond well.

If you have certain skin conditions or are pregnant, your provider may recommend waiting before starting treatments. A consultation will help determine the safest and most effective approach based on your skin type and medical history.
